JROTC   Facts

LAUSD has 31 JROTC programs located in the most economically depressed communities in our city (with no programs west of Fairfax HS). Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) is offered in LAUSD for physical education credit.  For the 2006-7 school year the costs are calculated to be:

·      $2.6 million- the approximate minimum cost for this program to LAUSD (The US Military pays the remaining amount of budget. The cost for the 2007-8 year is estimated to be approximately the same).

·      Total students served were 4,591 making the per pupil cost to be $557.25.

·      JROTC class size is an average of 12 students PER class (compare this to academic programs with 40 plus students).

·      Ten JROTC programs have firing ranges, contradicting the intention of the Zero Tolerance for Guns policy of LAUSD.

·      The JROTC program continues to violate the Calif. Education Code Section 51750 and LAUSD Policy Bulletin 2067.1 by involuntarily placing students into this program.

·      JROTC instructors do not hold standard California teaching credentials.

·      JROTC does not meet the California Education Code requirements for PE but has been used as a physical education elective.

JROTC is a military program taught by retired military personnel and often is a hub for military recruiters on high school campuses.
